21-GUN SALUTE FOR FOUNDING FATHER MR LEE KUAN YEW ON SUNDAY: Ng Eng Hen

Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen says the Singapore Armed Forces will be bidding Mr Lee Kuan Yew farewell with "highest honours".

SINGAPORE: Hours after Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) personnel carried out a rehearsal for the state funeral for Mr Lee Kuan Yew in the wee hours of Friday (Mar 27), Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen revealed details of the sendoff on Sunday.

In a Facebook post on Friday (Mar 27), Dr Ng wrote: “The SAF will bid Mr Lee our final farewell with the highest honours,” Dr Ng wrote.

He said as the gun carriage carries Mr Lee’s body from Parliament House, there will be a 21-gun salute fired by four ceremonial 25-pounder guns as the procession journeys around the Padang.
“Four RSAF Black Knights will also salute Mr Lee as his body passes City Hall with a ‘Missing Man’ formation where one Black Knight breaks off,” Dr Ng wrote.

As Mr Lee’s body crosses the Esplanade Bridge, Patrol Vessels RSS Dauntless and RSS Resilience will conduct a ceremonial sailpast off the Marina Barrage as a final salute, said Dr Ng.

The SCDF Public Warning System siren will be sounded twice islandwide at about 4pm to signal the start and end of a minute of silence for the late Mr Lee, according to details published on the Remembering Lee Kuan Yew website.

At about 3am on Friday, hundreds of SAF personnel were seen going through their paces for the state funeral procession. The gun carriage which carried Mr Lee's casket into Parliament House, was also seen making its rounds.

Dr Ng added that Mr Lee’s death has caused Singaporeans to focus on his life’s work, and served as a reminder of how Singapore started out.

Speaking about the funeral on Sunday, Dr Ng said: “It will be a painful moment of finality and parting, but life will go on.”

Dr Ng also quoted Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who shared a Chinese idiom with him. Translated, the idiom says: "A thousand sails pass the sunken barrage; ten thousand saplings spring forth around the dying tree."

“Mr Lee Kuan Yew would encourage us to continue to live life to its fullest, to take Singapore further and make the world proud of what more we can accomplish from what he had started,” Dr Ng wrote.

Where we are right now is nothing by chance, it has to have a team of great leaders to bring us to where we are, From a fishing village to a 1st world urban city nation. All Singaporean owe it to Mr Lee Kuan Yew and his team. Even though not all policies are likable by all, but we can see the results with our own eyes. Mr Lee had dedicated his entire life to the building of Singapore. Let's do our best to pay tribute to our founding father Mr Lee Kuan Yew. Let's focus on reading all the positive news rather than negative news. Let's do our best to salute our great leader. He deserve our respect.
